RIAA loses file sharing case to Oklahoma mom Debbie Foster

Ars gives the details on how an Oklahoma mother won her case against the RIAA. The RIAA had accused her of illegal downloading of music and offered her a $5,000 settlement.

Debbie Foster maintained that she hadn't done any such thing, went to court, and as part of her case requested the RIAA produce more information around the alleged events. The RIAA failed to give up the requested information, Foster filed for summary judgement, and the RIAA asked the court to withdraw its case.

Quote:
The court approved the RIAA's request, but named Foster the winner and awarded her attorneys fees over the RIAA's objections.

Of course the unpleasant flipside of this is that had the RIAA won, I believe Foster would have had to pay the RIAA's attorneys fees. This is why, while I'm happy the RIAA got a slap on the wrist, I'm not turning handsprings.
