Nine Inch Nails Releases Free Album, Options To Buy More Music

NIN ghosts heavy trafficGetting the notification on my feed reader from EvilAvatar that Nine Inch Nails is self-publishing their latest work, a set of all-instrumental tracks called Ghosts I-IV was a wonderful surprise this morning.

I quickly went online and instead of trying to find the free Ghosts I item I immediately bought the FLAC versions of all four albums for just five bucks. Unfortunately I haven't been able to successfully download them or the free Ghost I mp3's just yet. The downloads are failing and a quick trip to the website this afternoon gave me the above message, which you can click to see the full screen of options if you don't care to wait for their server to squeeze out the bytes to show you directly.

Their ecommerce server is struggling mightily to deal with the load, which is great for them, and as long as I can get the files I've bought sometime within the next day, is ok by me.

Check out the purchasing options here.

Update: The writeup at BroadbandReports has links to an official, legal working torrent and how to also get it from Amazon.com.

Update 2: The site is down for a while as it struggles to keep up, saying that over 3x the anticipated traffic hit their servers. Ouch.

$38 bucks to list on Amazon, $1.6M grossed first week.

Apparently it only cost Reznor $38 to list his mp3 album of Ghosts I-IV on the Amazon store via a system called TuneCore. I'm still a little confused about that. It seems that Reznor is keeping 100% of the royalties, though. Why would Amazon do something like that? To drive traffic to other things? Anyway, Wired has the bit of info on it.

In other news, the first week grossed $1.6 million for Reznor for all aspects of the Ghosts I-IV release. And he didn't even put advertising on his site! Just kidding. I think he's learned his lesson and will go crying back to the record labels now, right? Right?! Again, Wired has the story.

Wired also linked to when he announced Nine Inch Nails was a free agent back in October.

I can't wait to buy his next album, and to see more bands use his distribution platform.

Got the files.

During the day on Friday they opened up my helpdesk ticket and used it to reissue a download link to me.

The link changed somewhat from how it used to look, embedding the IP address in it. This makes me think they beefed things up to prevent link sharing and/or piracy of their download links, which is a good thing.

I was able to download the files Friday afternoon and have been enjoying them since. Well worth much more than the five bucks I paid for them completely legally and legitimately.

Nine Inch Nails Has A Helpdesk

It almost sounds like a Saturday Night Live skit, but Nine Inch Nails has a helpdesk.

You'd expect it to be hard to navigate, all in black and red, and scream at you when you click on ordinary things, leading you in circles until you wail in desparation and give up. But it's actually kind of nice.

They've opened a ticket for my request to get another download link. No information is in there as to when a new download link will be coming.

The Priciest Package Sold Out!

Techdirt reports that the $300 package has sold out, grossing $750,000 for Trent Reznor on that item alone in the three days since launch. That's unbelievable.

I still haven't gotten them to re-send me a download link for the $5 FLAC version I paid for. Cmon guys throw me my link again!
