It Happened To Me

The big game of the week is no doubt selling like crazy and if you add it to your tag here on TripleTags you can see just how many members on this site are playing that game. But not everyone is having a blissful time with this game. Some folks are seeing freeze-ups on their 60GB PS3 and others are seeing it freeze up on their Xbox 360. This is surprising given how long Rockstar took creating GTA4, especially after the delay, and even more surprising that this is happening with one of the oldest models of PS3. The freeze-ups apparently are happening for some during the intro sequence.

I myself had one freeze-up in the game during the mission that teaches you about drunkenness. It locked up the console solid: audio, video, the works. It only happened once, and I was able to reload and play that mission through again without incident, but that wasn't the only problem I had with the game. It also once shut down my PS3 when exiting to the XMB from the game. I've seen that happen with other games on rare occasions, so that's not as surprising as the crash.

Apparently Rockstar recommends erasing the Game Data that gets loaded to the hard drive -- not your saved games, so don't erase those -- and letting it reload it. Kotaku didn't get that advice from Rockstar support when they spoke to them. I hope we get a patch soon, but I'm happy to say that the game's automatic save option, turned on by default, really comes in handy in this case.

That said I try to save in a separate save slot at the safe house reasonably often. Never know when a save might get corrupted late in the game the way I had one get corrupted in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
