Ones to Watch on PSP and PS3 for May 2008

rtype_r9_figurineApril was nearly devoid of releases thanks to the massive landing of GTA IV but May is looking pretty heavily laden with titles that have some sleeper hit potential on both the PSP and PS3.

Echochrome lands on the PlayStation Store today, May 1st, with separate $10 versions for the PS3 and PSP. The levels on each are supposed to be unique, and just looking at a couple of screen shots makes my head hurt. You puzzle fiends out there will love it, I'm sure.

The movie tie-in Iron Man lands on May 2nd on several platforms, the PSP and PS3 among them. The demo for the PS3 version appeared on the PlayStation Store last week. CheapyD and Wombat on the CAGcast weren't too unkind in their description of it, though, saying that while there was something to it and it had potential, it didn't quite click, probably due to being rushed to meet the film launch.

May 6th is showing a Call of Duty 4 Game of The Year Edition, which should include the map pack currently being sold separately on the PlayStation Store. This edition is already available on the Xbox 360 and I imagine if I ever get around to renting COD4 I'd consider buying it in this pack instead of the original.

Also hitting on the 6th is the PSP's R-Type Command from Atlus. There's quite the buzz-generating preorder bonus for it, something called an R-9A.

World Championship Cards resurfaces on May 13th for the PSP. Didn't we try and get this game out last month? Is someone waiting for this one?

Bionic Commando: Rearmed shows a May 15th release date on the PlayStation Network. This fresh coat of 3D paint on the well-regarded original Bionic Commando comes with several offline only multiplayer modes along with the single player game. It'll also be available on the Xbox Live Arcade.

Haze might hit retail on May 20th and there are promises of a demo of its four-player online co-op gameplay mode, something that seems to be setting it apart from the other titles. Here's hoping the demo hooks lots of folks into playing the game. Without that, I don't know if this oft-delayed shooter has a chance of getting traction alongside established properties.

SingStar for the PlayStation 3 is headed our way on May 20th as well, finally reaching North America after a long stint selling well in Europe. The good news is that the game will be sold separately and with a microphone bundle, allowing you to just pick up the base game if you already have a SingStar microphone from the numerous PS2 versions. I know at least one person who has been really enjoying SingStar on the PS2 and thinks this, along with the SingStar Store launching sometime later with 200 songs on tap, could be what gets her and her husband to upgrade to the current console generation.

The PS3 gets a version of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars on the 27th. This game apparently hit on the PC last year (thanks Joe for the heads-up on that one during our podcast) to positive reviews, and it'll also be hitting the Xbox 360 that day. I'm wondering if the straight-up shooter formula isn't going to fare well up against the likes of Call of Duty 4 and now Grand Theft Auto 4, but I suppose gamers will want something before a certain Snake slithers onto the PS3 next month. You can see more on Shacknews and Evil Avatar.

And if that's not enough for you, hold on to your bandanas because next month is June, and that means Metal Gear Solid 4 is coming only to the PlayStation 3.
