Earlier this month in anticipation of the release of Metal Gear Solid 4 the PlayStation Universe posted a list of 12 tips for players of the game. Now that MGS4 is out we won't grumble about their possible early access to the game, we'll just pass them along to you to help you through the sometimes convoluted and always cerebral world of Metal Gear Solid.

I haven't gotten my hands on this title just yet, but the number one tip tells gamer dads like me that there's hope for us to complete the game. The tip is, when backed into a corner with little life or psyche left, take a breath, save the game, and stop playing. That's right, take a couple days off!

Not only will you return to the game fresh and with a new reserve of patience, but every real-world day spent not playing the game will earn you 20% of your health and psyche bars back when you load it up. This is a welcome touch for someone with so much to play on his PS3 that I doubt I'll be playing MGS4 nonstop once I get it.

This is similar to a feature of Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence I discovered when I was stuck trying to do a sniper fight with The End. I didn't know why this had happened, but I got stuck on that sniper fight and ended up leaving the game alone for a while. Apparently reloading after a week leads Snake to find him dead, having passed on of natural causes in the wilderness instead of having to fight him. The GameTrailers retrospective on MGS3 explains that Kojima put in the feature so spending a week away from the game gets you off the hook from having to fight him.
