I'm happy my kids are still so young that I can pretend I'll have more willpower than those parents who spend horrid amounts of money on their kid's 16th birthday party. Today, however, is the sweet 16th birthday for something big that is so important that it has already earned more money than all those greedy kids have asked to have spent on them. That something is the first-person shooter.
Wired profiles Wolfenstein 3-D, the ID software first person shooter that, while not the first 3D shooter, rocketed it to prominence as a popular game genre. Think of everything today that has a first person mode that lets you, well, shoot, open doors, get keys to open other doors, and maybe if you're lucky bludgeon enemies with weaponry. They all owe a lot to this lanky sixteen year old.
Happy birthday Wolfenstein 3-D!
