LittleBigPlanet Online Co-Op Creation Coming Later

littlebigplanet_us_boxart_262pxI was shocked to find out that the ability to build LittleBigPlanet levels together online with your friends is going to come after launch of the game in it's first major update. Of course now that the game is gold I expect maybe one or two details to spoil the hype aura a bit on this highly anticipated title, but it wasn't the delay of this feature that made me stare with my mouth open, it's that HOLY CRAP I'LL BE ABLE TO BUILD LEVELS ONLINE WITH MY FRIENDS?!!

Seriously I had no idea that was going to be in the game at all. I'd just assumed we'd have to be in the same room to build levels together, just as all those previewers did. At game's launch you'll see a lot of solo efforts really shine, and it makes me wonder how it'll be able to track who made a level. Surely it needs to track everyone who worked on a given level, right? Or will the level owner get all the credit. Now if it took a chosen snapshot of each sackboy that worked on it and scrolled it as credits at the end of the level, wouldn't that be sweet?

The possibilities, you can see, are very creative, quite endless, and since this is a Sony property, not likely to be implemented at all. Hey don't hate me, I'm not the one who put a console out and took almost two years to put Trophies and in-game text messaging into its firmware to hit the low bar set by a competitor maybe four years earlier.

That said I really don't mind waiting for the first major update. The fact that they call it a "major" update makes me think it'll show up in early 2009. It's OK. I think we'll all be able to keep busy until then with the Fall flood of new games headed our way.
