Media Molecule Staying Independent

littlebigplanet_us_boxart_162pxIn a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Alex Evans of Media Molecule extolled the virtues of a small development team for keeping the vision and focus tight on LittleBigPlanet. He also mentioned something that made my PS3-exclusive heart sink a little bit. While Sony is actively promoting LittleBigPlanet these days, there aren't any plans for Media Molecule to be acquired by Sony and their exclusivity deal for working with Sony is time limited.

Something else I noticed while watching the latest trailers for the game over at GameTrailers tonight is that the words Sony Computer Entertainment aren't shown ahead of the LBP trailers the way it is on other second party games like Resistance 2 or Infamous. It looks like LBP isn't a Sony property, apparently leaving it in Media Molecule's hands to do with as they wish once the Sony exclusivity deal is done. Given Microsoft's outspoken desire to go for the non-gamer or casual gamer demographic I'd expect a Microsoft rep to be bringing the Media Molecule guys coffee and giving them foot rubs whenever the Sony reps have their backs turned.
