Hulu Cuts Off PS3 Browsers

hulu_logoThe PS Blog welcomes iPhone and PSP users

Putting the ACCESS-based browsers in the PS3 and PSP firmwares has opened up bits of the web, adding some value to each console. That value, however, depends on the generosity of third parties and their willingness to cater to those particular browsers. Last week we saw two events that demonstrated what can happen. The PlayStation Blog implemented updates to make it more compatible with the iPhone and PSP browsers to include more users, and Hulu blocked the PS3 browser entirely without warning or official justification to exclude more users.

I haven't used my PSP browser in a very long time -- I have ready access to computing platforms with better browsers -- so this update to the PS Blog isn't something I've been clamoring for but the loss of Hulu on the PS3 is aggravating. As someone who has already thrown subscription television overboard in favor of streaming video on the internet I was hoping to watch more of it on my PS3 without resorting to unsupported software.
