Minecraft Nabs Five GDC Awards, C418's Soundtrack Released

c418_minecraft_volume_alpha_cover_artMojang's debut title from Markus Persson, the indie hit Minecraft, earned a slew of impressive awards this week at the Game Developers Conference and the related Indie Game Fest. Notch (Markus) was on hand to stammer incredulously and nervously while accepting the awards. That's how you can tell he didn't think he was really going to win, folks.

At the Indie Game Fest, Minecraft won the Seumas McNally Grand Prize and the Audience Award.

At the GDC proper, up against industry titans like Rockstar Games and their zillion-selling Red Dead Redemption (which got Game of the Year at GDC), Minecraft did very, very well. It won Innovation, Best Downloadable Game, and Best Debut Game.

Also, C418 is the author of the music for Minecraft, as well as many of the sound effects, and the official soundtrack Minecraft Volume Alpha has been released on Bandcamp for just USD$3.99, which is quite a steal. Some of it consists of music thematically similar to the game but not released as part of the game, but the telltale, signature haunting and beautiful tracks are all in there. Notch (Markus) of Mojang has said that all of the money from those sales on Bandcamp goes to C418, so you can know you're directly supporting the artist there.

Red Dead Redemption DLC 3-Pack and Double XP Weekend

rdr_redonblack_website_title_500x197The light dusting of snow in the forest of Tall Trees accentuated its quiet beauty in the early morning light. I was decked out in the Expert Hunter outfit, shotgun at the ready, waiting on horseback for a grizzly to show up and charge at me. I was after 3 one-shot bear kills.

Free Red Dead Redemption Outfits Coming Oct 12th

While my wife doesn't really like the *chunk*sqwitchy*sqwitchy*squitchy* *shiff*shiff*sha*shiff*shiff* sound of my particular John Marsden opening up and skinning a fresh killed deer, raccoon, armadillo, coyote, wolf, boar, or cougar. Or horse...that was definitely already dead...when I got there.

Ones to Watch: PS3 and PSP for May 2010

Modnation-Racers_PS3_US_ESRBboxart_160wSpring's in full swing, just ask any allergy sufferer. May releases on Sony's platforms are nothing to sneeze at, though. The PS3 has a pair of exclusives that have been getting good buzz so far. 3D Dot Game Heroes brings extremely Zelda-like 8-bit action to the platform with a sense of humor and nostalgia on the 11th.

GTA Episodes from Liberty City Are Coming to PS3 After All

gta4cityscapeI know you're going to be bored, PS3 owners, with MAG out now, White Knight Chronicles coming in February along with Heavy Rain and the likes of God of War III, Final Fantasy XIII, and Yakuza 3 in March. You were really hungry for something more, right? How about the digital release and in-store Blu-ray version of GTA Episodes From Liberty City featuring the two formerly Xbox 360-exclusive add-on adventures for Grand Theft Auto IV? Those will apparently be hitting retail and the PlayStation Store on March 30th.

I'm happy to see them show up and I'm definitely going to be picking up a disc copy for two reasons. One, I'm pretty short on hard drive space on my PS3 and two, it's guaranteed to be discounted at some point at retail. Once again, I'm looking to save a few bucks. It'll be nice to see Yakuza 3 get compared to it if it makes its March release date.

Full press release after the jump.
