I've had a list of things I wanted the PS3 Firmware updated to do for years now, and the list has gradually been getting smaller as things come true. Sure, some things haven't come true as I'd hoped. I was hoping to be able to pay an annual fee for remote backup of my whole PS3 to an established service like Mozy or Carbonite, for example, not clunky, per-save exporting to a 150 MB storage locker for PS Plus subscribers only. Why should Sony reinvent these wheels when they can partner with a company to do it for them safely and, ahem, securely?
Skype on the PSP has been a thorn in my side for years. It never came to the PS3, and with Microsoft buying Skype for a whopping $8.5 billion, I think we can scratch that off the list of things I really wanted on the PS3 and NGP too. It would have been perfect with the PlayStation Eye to have cross-platform video calling.
